League Certified Instructors (LCI) are obligated to convey some things that adults and teenagers need to know about bicycling. They are:

Always

  • Wear a helmet
  • Conduct an ABC Quick Check before every ride
  • Ride on the right and obey traffic control devices
  • Ride predictably and be visible at all times
  • Scan for traffic and signal lane changes and turns
  • Control your bike by practicing bike handling skills
  • Drink before you are thirsty and eat before you are hungry

Most of these items are fairly straightforward, but the ABC Quick Check is not. It simply means to check:

  • For air in your tires
  • That your brakes are in working order
  • That your cranks, chain and cassette are also in working order
  • That your quick releases, if you have any, are tight in the frame
  • And, to simply check your entire bike over for any other possible problems.
